About the academy
See your fire department from a new perspective.
The Josephine Citizens Fire Academy is a community-education program that gives participants a closer look at the responsibilities, services, and daily operations of the Fire Department.
Participants will meet department members, learn how the department prepares for and responds to emergencies, and experience selected demonstrations and activities in a safe, supervised setting.

Explore apparatus, equipment, protective gear, communications, prevention, and emergency operations through guided demonstrations.
Take part safely
Participate in selected hands-on activities designed for public education, always under department supervision.
Optional ride-out
Accepted participants may request a ride-out, subject to approval, availability, screening, and additional requirements.

This is not firefighter training.
Completing the Citizens Fire Academy does not certify, license, employ, appoint, or authorize a participant to act as a firefighter or emergency responder.
2026 class dates

Wednesday sessions are 6:30–9:00 p.m. Saturday field sessions are 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Field-session locations will be provided to accepted participants.
No class will be held November 11. Topics, demonstrations, and activities may be adjusted based on department operations, weather, safety, and instructor availability.
Who should apply
Curious about how your fire department serves Josephine?
The academy is designed for adults who want to better understand local fire and emergency services and strengthen their connection with the department.
Optional opportunity
Experience a department ride-out.
Accepted participants may express interest in an optional ride-out. Ride-outs are observational and are not guaranteed. They depend on department approval, operational availability, successful screening, and completion of all required forms.
Participants must follow all safety, confidentiality, privacy, photography, and crew instructions and may be restricted from certain scenes or patient-care areas.
Does the academy train me to become a firefighter?
No. It is strictly a public-education program and does not provide firefighter certification, licensing, employment, or authority to respond to emergencies.
How many applicants will be selected?
The inaugural class is limited to 16 participants. Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance.
Do I need previous fire-service experience?
No. The academy is designed for community members who want to learn more about the department.
Will I have to sign additional forms?
Yes. Selected applicants must complete the City-approved waiver and any required screening, privacy, ride-out, or program forms before applicable activities.
Are class activities final?
Class dates are established, but topics, demonstrations, and activities may change to meet department operations, weather, safety, and instructor availability.
